Critical thinking, Public Speaking, and Writing Skills!
In this program, students will learn the basics of Public Forum Debate, which is the primary debate format at highschool debate tournaments in the US. Your child will learn to write a case, conduct research, use evidence, give rebuttals, and engage in cross examination. Students will also get a lot of practice with speaking confidence, projection, body language, tone, and poise.

Topic Areas - this summer, our students will research two different topic areas. The final resolutions will be selected a few weeks before the session.
Topic 1: US Policy. This topic area focuses specifically on domestic US policy - it covers everything from healthcare, to labor laws, to immigration policy, economic policy, and more. During this session, students will focus on a specific area of US policy and its affect on US families and communities.
Topic 2: Global Current Events. This topic area includes a wide range of issues, including trade policy, geopolitics, regional instability, and global healthcare. During this session, students will focus on a specific currents events issue and the correct international response.
Topic 3: Energy/Technology. This topic area covers a range of options including climate change policy, biotechnology, infrastructure, big tech companies, regulation, and more. During this session students will focus on a specific area of technology and debate its harms and benefits.
6:1 Student Teacher Ratio
We group our students by age and experience into classes of twelve with two teachers per class. Having a small class size is absolutely critical for making sure that every student gets to speak - even our shy or more reluctant students. The 6:1 student teacher ratio also means that our instructors really get to know each child's strengths and weaknesses and provide targeted coaching throughout the week.

At school, public speaking can be scary, intimidating, and high pressure. At Lumos, we take the exact opposite approach. We want public speaking to be fun, easy, and familiar. We incorporate lots of fun speaking games and activities into the curriculum so students can really have fun as they practice public speaking. Lumos provides a low-pressure environment, where your child has the space to experiment and really find their own unique voice!
