4:1 Student Teacher Ratio And Daily One-On-One Coaching Sessions!

Students will learn the basics of public speaking and prepare to give a big speech (Ted Talk, Historical Speech, or Humorous Speech) for our final presentation! They will learn about projection, body language, eye contact, and get lots and lots of practice giving speeches!

All our programs have a guaranteed 4:1 student teacher ratio so that every child gets ample opportunity to speak. Each day students will have a morning group session and and an afternoon group session. In addition, there will be two sets of one-on-one conferences with Instructors. Even in an online format, we'll have fun games, speaking activities, and dynamic instructors that students love at Lumos!

TOPIC AREAS

Each session will center on one of the following topic areas. Please note, younger students will have lots of personal coaching and will focus on simplified versions of these topic areas, so that they can feel comfortable learning about debate at their level.

Topic #1: The United States Should Provide a Universal Basic Income for its Citizens.

As technological automation advances, many political thinkers are worried about the millions of Americans that will be out of work. Students will discuss whether the federal government should provide a Universal Basic Income, an annual cash payment given to every citizen. Students will be asked to think about a range of important economic and cultural issues like: poverty, economic inequality, the welfare system, technological automation, artificial intelligence, inflation, and ethics. Students are not expected to already have familiarity with these issues before coming to the session but will be encouraged to learn about and discuss these issues with our instructors and with each other.

Topic #2: On Balance, the Benefits of Social Media Outweigh the Harms.

In this topic, students will be encouraged to use their own experience but also explore broader issues in culture. Students will be encouraged to consider issues such as: political polarization, mental health and happiness, foreign election interference, grassroots political fundraising campaigns (e.g. AOC or Bernie Sanders), #metoo, #blacklivesmatter, the Arab Spring, and the Hong Kong protests. No debate pair or class will cover all or even most of these issues, but we encourage students to pick one or two issues they care about and explore the impact of social media to build a strong debate case.

Class size of Four

For 2020, our class size will be capped at four students per class. We've found that, especially for online coaching, having a small class size is absolutely critical for making sure that every student gets to speak - even our shy or more reluctant students! The 4:1 student teacher ratio also means that our instructors really get to know each child's strengths and weaknesses and provide targeted coaching throughout the week.

Students will practice a variety of different speeches - from argumentative, to informative, to impromptu! The key to building speaking confidence is practice, practice, practice!

Some students need to speak louder, some students need  more eye contact, and some need to work on speaking speed. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses!

Private Coaching Built-In

The most effective teaching we do is in one-on-one coaching with students. These highly-focused sessions lead to immense growth in each student's capabilities, because they get immediate feedback on their volume, voice, tone. Our schedule has been designed to emphasize one-on-one coaching; throughout a student's five days, they'll get ten 15-minute one-on-one coaching sessions!
